The Israeli Air Force is among the users of the American-made stealth fighter jet, the F-35. Recent leaks from the U.S. government suggest that these jets could potentially be involved in retaliation against Iran, utilizing aerial refueling to launch strikes from Israel. This comes on the heels of a significant assault by Iran on October 1, which involved nearly 200 missile strikes. As the world watches closely, questions arise about how Israel will respond.
In an interview with CNN, House Speaker Johnson stated, “The investigation is ongoing, and I will receive a classified briefing within hours… We are closely monitoring this situation.”
Reports from CNN and the Associated Press indicate that documents dated October 15-16 were posted on Telegram by a user named “Middle East Spectator.” These documents began circulating on the 18th and claim to have been leaked by someone within the U.S. intelligence community, initially suggesting they originated from the Pentagon or the Department of Defense. It appears this information was primarily gathered through satellite imagery analysis and is marked as “highly classified,” indicating that it is intended for sharing only among the U.S. and its “Five Eyes” allies—Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK.
The documents suggest that Israel is gearing up for an attack against Iran. One document, allegedly compiled by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, outlines Israel’s plans for transporting munitions. Another classified file from the NSA appears to detail Israeli Air Force exercises involving air-to-ground missile operations, believed to be preparations for an assault on Iran. Additionally, there is a document that implies Israel possesses nuclear weapons, a fact the country has historically refrained from confirming; however, it also states that the U.S. has not observed any indications of Israel planning to use these nuclear capabilities against Iran.
It remains unclear how these documents were leaked, whether through hacking or intentional internal disclosure. A U.S. official noted that investigations are underway to determine who accessed these files. The Telegram channel disseminating this information claims to be based in Tehran and has previously shared memes of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, promoting the so-called “Axis of Resistance,” which includes various Iranian-backed militant groups across the Middle East.
This leak comes at a particularly sensitive time in U.S.-Israeli relations, likely to further inflame tensions. Mick Mulroy, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for Middle East affairs and retired CIA officer, commented, “This is a serious breach that could challenge future coordination between the U.S. and Israel.”
Last year, Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira leaked military secrets on a social media platform, which strained U.S. relations with allies like South Korea and Ukraine. Notably, one of the leaked documents bears a resemblance to the style of data that Teixeira released.
