At a regular press conference on October 21, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed reporters regarding a recent incident involving the Chinese Consulate in Mandalay, Myanmar.
When asked about reports of an explosion at the consulate, Lin confirmed that at approximately 5 PM local time on October 18, a nearby office building was targeted in a blast. Fortunately, there were no casualties; however, there was some damage to the consulate facilities. Lin expressed deep shock at the attack and condemned it in the strongest terms.
He noted that the Foreign Ministry and Chinese diplomatic missions in Myanmar activated emergency protocols immediately to manage the situation. China has formally lodged a serious diplomatic protest with Myanmar, urging them to thoroughly investigate the incident, apprehend those responsible, and ensure strict legal repercussions. Lin emphasized the need for heightened security measures to protect Chinese diplomatic missions, projects, and personnel in Myanmar, aiming to prevent any similar incidents in the future.
In response, Myanmar expressed its own shock and regret over the event, pledging to take necessary actions and fulfill its international obligations regarding the security of Chinese personnel and institutions in the country. Furthermore, the Chinese Consulate in Mandalay has issued a safety alert, advising all Chinese citizens, businesses, and organizations in Myanmar to remain vigilant, enhance security measures, and prepare for potential threats.
