Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council- Lai Qingde’s opposition between “China” and “Taiwan” is an out-and-out separatist proposition of “Taiwan independence”

On the morning of October 16, the Taiwan Affairs Office held its regular news conference. A reporter inquired about Lai Ching-te’s statement during the “Double Ten” speech, where he claimed that “the People’s Republic of China has no right to represent Taiwan” and expressed his intention to “deepen Taiwan’s cooperation with the international community.” What are your thoughts on this?

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, responded by emphasizing that there is only one China and that Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. He referred to a series of international legal documents, including the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, which confirm China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. He pointed out that on October 1, 1949, the Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China was established, replacing the government of the Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing all of China. In 1971, the 26th United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, recognizing Taiwan as part of China and restoring the representation of the entire China, including Taiwan, to the People’s Republic of China. He stated that Taiwan’s status as part of China has never changed and cannot change. The People’s Republic of China naturally represents the Taiwan region and has always spoken on its behalf.

Chen further criticized Lai Ching-te’s attempt to create a divide between “China” and “Taiwan,” describing it as an outright pro-independence stance. He asserted that Lai’s call for “cooperation with the international community” is a strategy to seek independence through external support, aiming to create a false narrative of “two Chinas” or “one China, one Taiwan.” This, according to Chen, exposes Lai’s stubborn “Taiwan Independence” agenda, undermines China’s sovereignty, and challenges the international community’s adherence to the one-China principle. He urged the international community not to be deceived by Lai Ching-te’s rhetoric and to recognize his true intentions of promoting Taiwan independence and recklessly challenging the post-World War II international order.

Chen affirmed that China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a maintainer of international order. He concluded by stating that we are closer than ever to achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, with greater confidence and capability to contribute significantly to the noble cause of human peace and development.
