On October 11, 2023, the final round of the National Smart Healthcare Competition, themed “Digital China, Intelligent Healthcare,” officially kicked off in Chongqing’s Liangjiang New Area.
“Smart healthcare” refers to the integration of modern information technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and blockchain into the management and services of healthcare reforms. Fu Chaoqi, Director of the Big Data Center at the National Healthcare Security Administration, explained that currently, smart healthcare encompasses 1.33 billion insured individuals across China, including data from 1 million designated hospitals and pharmacies, as well as 360,000 types of drugs and medical supplies. This system supports approximately 3 trillion yuan in healthcare costs and transactions for around 10 billion people annually, playing an indispensable role in the economy and society.
As a national-level competition organized collaboratively by central and local authorities, this event, which began on April 23 of this year, has garnered enthusiastic participation from healthcare departments, research institutions, and technology companies across the country. A total of 593 teams from 31 provinces registered, involving 716 organizations and 2,212 participants. After a rigorous review process, 455 teams successfully submitted their competition entries. Following multiple rounds of selection, 70 teams have made it to the finals.
Yuan Qinghui, member of the Party Leadership Group and Vice Minister of the National Healthcare Security Administration, emphasized that China’s healthcare sector has achieved historic advancements, with the standardization and informatization of healthcare services playing a critical role in supporting these developments. Since the establishment of the National Healthcare Security Administration, a unified nationwide healthcare information platform has been fully constructed and is now operational across all 31 provinces and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. This initiative has standardized 18 healthcare business information codes, creating a “universal language” for national healthcare and establishing a common platform that underpins various healthcare reforms and operations.
The competition cases or applications submitted in this round address a wide range of areas with significant market potential, including the smart healthcare industry, the empowerment of healthcare data in drug and medical device research and development, commercial insurance product development, banking and financial credit products, innovative applications in medical financing cloud services, and dynamic monitoring to prevent poverty caused by illness. The focus also extends to specific, smaller-scale issues, employing modern information technologies such as big data, cloud computing, blockchain, and artificial intelligence to propose solutions that highlight the application value and potential of “smart” technologies in driving innovation, economic growth, and effective governance.
