In a recent interview, we learned about a shocking incident in Abuja where assailants attempted to attack the home of Dr. Leon Usigbe, the Abuja Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Tribune. Early yesterday morning, just after midnight, a group of intruders targeted his residence on Kurape Road in Karshi, which is near the Federal Capital Territory.
According to reports, the intruders shot and wounded a neighborhood vigilante who was on guard at the time. One of the assailants managed to scale the perimeter fence and unlock the gate from inside, allowing others to enter the property. Their initial actions included vandalizing windows with stones and attempting to break down both the front and back doors, though they were ultimately unsuccessful.
Fortunately, the anti-kidnapping squad, recently deployed from Lafia due to a troubling rise in abduction incidents, arrived on the scene within minutes. Upon their arrival, the suspects opened fire, injuring three soldiers. In response, the squad returned fire, which caused the assailants to flee before they could access the building.
Dr. Usigbe was not at home during the incident, but his wife and children were present and understandably shaken by the experience. This attack marks the third kidnapping attempt in the area within just three months, with two families reportedly having previously paid ransoms for the return of abducted loved ones.
In a statement, DSP Ramhan Nansel, spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating, “Our anti-kidnapping unit repelled that incident.”
