Pikachus everywhere- Fans flock to UK’s biggest gaming expo

Thousands of comic and gaming enthusiasts descended on London last Saturday for one of the UK’s most vibrant days on the convention calendar, as the ExCeL center hosted the largest gaming, comic, and pop culture event in the country. This event, named MCM X EGX, saw attendees dressed in meticulously crafted costumes, showcasing their creativity and passion.

Can you tell us about the experience of attending this event?

“It’s a sea of color and excitement!” said one enthusiastic attendee, highlighting the atmosphere. For many, the joy of being among fellow fans was a key part of the experience.

How was this year’s event unique compared to previous ones?

This year marked the first time the annual video game showcase was combined with MCM, which organizes Comic Con. This integration offered guests a wider array of activities, including lightsaber battles, costume contests, and card game sessions. “I love the variety,” said one participant. “It’s like a dream for fans of all kinds.”

We spoke to Ellie, who came dressed as the Joker. She shared, “I got up at 6 a.m. and spent two and a half hours putting this costume together.” Her commitment to her craft was echoed by another fan, Poppy, who spent three months creating her Husk costume from the show “Hazbin Hotel.”

What did the event have to offer in terms of activities and attractions?

The convention also featured martial arts demonstrations led by Faisal Mian, a seasoned instructor who shared his skills with fans eager to learn swordsmanship. Organizers estimated that over 100,000 people attended, coming from all corners of the UK and beyond. Multi-stage discussions allowed fans to engage with more than 700 panelists discussing their passions.

The venue buzzed with energy, as fans queued to explore exhibits from over 450 exhibitors showcasing a mix of video games and merchandise. “My favorite part is meeting other cosplayers,” said Catherine Mariah. “By the end of the day, you feel a bit sad knowing it’s all over, like you have the ‘con blues.’”

What was the highlight of the showcase for the attendees?

The showcase featured stalls dedicated to iconic characters like Batman and Captain America, making it a must-visit for comic book lovers. Attendees could also enjoy themed areas, such as one known as “The Farm,” which provided a whimsical twist on the convention experience.

On the gaming side, players had the chance to test out new titles including “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” and “Avowed,” an upcoming fantasy RPG. However, the gaming industry faces challenges, as several major brands withdrew from the event due to job cuts and strikes affecting development schedules.

As organizers combined EGX with Comic Con, their hope was to sustain interest in the video game segment of the expo while drawing a larger audience for the publishers who remained committed. The excitement on the convention floor, however, clearly demonstrated the deep passion shared by all who attended.
