In an interview about this year’s National Day holiday movie trends, statistics from the National Film Administration highlight that from October 1 to 7, the overall box office reached an impressive 2.104 billion yuan, with 52.09 million admissions. Remarkably, domestic films were responsible for 2.017 billion yuan, making up 95.87% of the total earnings.
When asked about the variety of films released during the holiday, it was evident that the selection catered to a wide range of audience tastes, featuring genres like war, science fiction, comedy, action, and musicals. On the very first day of the holiday, cinemas saw a tremendous spike in attendance.
Yang Yujie, General Manager of a cinema in Xiamen, remarked, “Many screenings were fully booked several days in advance, especially for popular films during peak times; we had a lot of guests coming in.”
One standout film, “The Volunteer Army: The Battle for Survival,” led the box office with 805 million yuan. This film, noted for its strong emphasis on family values, broke the billion-yuan mark in daily earnings for six consecutive days and has already secured a spot among the top eight films on the 2024 box office list.
Local resident Li Xiaomei shared her thoughts, stating, “I found this film to be quite impressive; the production scale was grand, and it really moved me.”
Another success story was “The Panda Project,” which not only excelled at the box office but also blended action, comedy, and family themes that resonated with many viewers, especially families. The film partnered with Sichuan’s cultural tourism sector to host a themed event called “Travel to Sichuan with The Panda Project.” Notably, outdoor scenes were filmed at Fairy Mountain in Wulong, Chongqing, which has now become a must-visit travel hotspot.
Visitor Wang Qian expressed, “I’ve heard so much about the stunning scenery at Fairy Mountain, and being here as a film location for ‘The Panda Project’ feels like stepping right into the movie; the views are absolutely breathtaking.”
Additionally, this year’s average ticket price during the National Day holiday hovered around 41 yuan, marking the lowest price point in four years. To encourage more moviegoers, various initiatives were introduced across the nation. For example, Beijing allocated 10 million yuan in viewing subsidies to over 250 cinemas, benefiting nearly one million attendees. Shanghai also took significant steps, distributing 45 million yuan in movie consumption vouchers from shortly before the holiday through the end of the year, expected to assist over 1.5 million viewers. In Jiangsu Province, a daily offering of 5,000 vouchers providing a 20 yuan discount was made available, totaling 35,000 vouchers.
