On October 9, during the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, a significant resolution was adopted unanimously. This resolution honors the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a collaborative effort spearheaded by representatives from China, Denmark, France, Kenya, and Mexico. It received robust support, with participation from 112 countries.
Chen Xu, the Chinese representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, emphasized the historical significance of the Beijing Fourth World Conference on Women, where this Declaration and Platform were first established nearly three decades ago. “This milestone marked a crucial advancement for women’s rights globally,” Chen stated. He pointed out, however, that despite the strides made in improving women’s social status over the years, there are still challenges in fully realizing the commitments outlined in the Beijing Declaration. The resolution aims to reinvigorate the spirit of this Declaration, reflecting a collective effort to accelerate gender equality and tackle enduring issues.
Countries such as France, Finland, Gambia, Sudan, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Argentina, and Japan expressed their appreciation during the adoption of the resolution, praising China for leading this vital initiative to promote women’s rights around the world in alignment with the principles of the Beijing Declaration.
Looking to the future, China has proposed organizing a global women’s summit in 2025 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Beijing conference. The unanimous approval of this resolution by the Human Rights Council is viewed as an important step toward fostering unity and turning shared aspirations into concrete global actions.
