Mexico counting dead from ‘zombie storm’ John

“Can you tell us about the impact of Hurricane John in Mexico?”

“Absolutely. Tragically, the hurricane has claimed the lives of at least 15 people, according to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. It made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane near Acapulco on the Pacific coast before it lost some strength. However, it regrouped over the Pacific and returned to the coast, which led meteorologists to refer to it as a ‘zombie storm’ due to its erratic behavior.”

“What kind of destruction did the hurricane cause?”

“The heavy rains from the hurricane resulted in catastrophic landslides and flooding, leaving many residents isolated and resulting in several fatalities. Some areas received nearly an entire year’s worth of rainfall in just a few days, which proved to be particularly deadly.”

“What challenges did local authorities face following the storm?”

“President López Obrador mentioned that while Hurricane John uprooted trees and damaged buildings, the significant rainfall was a more severe threat. In Oaxaca, for instance, around 80 landslides occurred, some of which buried homes and trapped residents. Numerous communities became inaccessible as roads were washed out.”

“What does the situation look like in Acapulco now?”

“Acapulco, which is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Otis last year, has suffered severe flooding from this latest storm. City officials are calling on boat owners to assist in rescuing people stranded in neighborhoods that are underwater. Disturbing videos shared on social media show residents wading through shoulder-high waters, with some even seeking refuge on their rooftops.”

“And how are people coping in the aftermath?”

“More than 5,000 people have been evacuated, with around 3,800 currently in shelters. Claudia Sheinbaum, who is poised to become Mexico’s new president, plans to visit Guerrero state alongside her ministers to ensure that affected residents receive the support and assistance they need.”
