Jennifer Lawrence joins forces with Nobel laureate to address oppression of Afghan women by theologians

Jennifer Lawrence, the Academy Award-winning actress known for her roles in “The Hunger Games” and “Silver Linings Playbook,” has recently produced a powerful documentary titled “Bread & Roses.” The film made its debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the prestigious Cannes Golden Eye Award, and it has now officially released its trailer. Produced in collaboration with her partner Justine Ciarrocchi, the documentary offers an intimate look at the lives of three Afghan women and their unwavering spirit of resistance.

With Malala Yousafzai, the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate, serving as an executive producer, “Bread & Roses” takes us to Afghanistan post-Taliban takeover in 2021. This heartbreaking narrative unfolds in a land where 20 million women have seen their fundamental rights—including education, employment, and the ability to travel alone—stripped away, severely impacting their livelihoods.

The documentary follows the personal struggles of these three women as they fight for autonomy. Directed by Sahra Mani, who previously helmed the acclaimed documentary “Finding Humanity,” the film highlights the dire circumstances faced by Afghan women. It features shocking and poignant visuals while also capturing the incredible strength, resilience, and courage that these women embody.

Sahra Mani emphasizes that closing girls’ schools in Afghanistan transcends a feminist issue; it poses a significant concern for international security. She notes, “The Taliban understands that educated mothers are less likely to let their children be indoctrinated or become future soldiers. Ensuring that girls’ schools continue to operate in Afghanistan is vital for global security and the future.”
