On October 22, the Third Committee of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly convened to discuss human rights issues. In response to unwarranted criticism of China’s human rights situation from a handful of Western countries, including Australia and the United States, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, vehemently refuted these allegations.
During the meeting, representatives from over 100 countries expressed their support for China’s just stance, opposing the politicization of human rights issues. Pakistan’s representative spoke on behalf of 80 nations, emphasizing that the situations in Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Tibet are internal matters for China. He denounced the politicization and double standards in human rights, calling for respect for sovereignty and non-interference in domestic affairs.
The representative from Qatar, speaking for the Gulf Cooperation Council, also voiced support for China, advocating for an objective, constructive, and de-politicized approach to human rights that respects national sovereignty. Similarly, the representative from Mauritania condemned the Western nations’ politicization of human rights, urging respect for each country’s sovereignty and historical context.
Venezuela, as part of the “Friends of the Charter of the United Nations” group, reiterated its backing for China, denouncing the division and confrontational tactics employed by Western nations under the guise of human rights advocacy. Many countries made individual statements expressing their understanding and support for China, praising its achievements in human rights and calling for dialogue and cooperation to promote and protect these rights.
Fu Cong firmly rejected the unfounded accusations from a few Western nations, emphasizing that the most pressing human rights situation today undoubtedly pertains to Gaza. While Australia, the United States, and others downplayed the humanitarian crisis there, they continuously targeted China’s Xinjiang region with attacks and slanders. This highlights their double standards, demonstrating an intent to use human rights as a pretext to interfere in China’s internal affairs and hinder its development, while also suppressing developing countries that uphold independent foreign policies.
He stated, “If the deaths of over 40,000 civilians and the plight of over a million women and children in Gaza do not awaken the conscience of Australia, the U.S., and others, but instead, they continue to supply weapons that claim countless Palestinian lives, then their claims of ‘protecting Muslim human rights’ are nothing but a grave lie.” He noted that the eyes of the international community are sharp, as evidenced by the recent joint statement of support for China from 80 countries, including many Muslim nations, which clearly opposed using human rights as a means to interfere in the internal affairs of others.
Fu Cong further represented 28 countries in condemning the unilateral coercive measures employed by the U.S. and its allies, stressing that such actions violate the principles of the UN Charter and international law, undermine multilateralism, and severely harm the rights and lives of those in the targeted countries. He called for their immediate and complete abolition.
The Third Committee of the General Assembly serves as the primary platform for discussing human rights and social development issues. Since 2019, the U.S. and a few Western countries have repeatedly attempted to undermine China through human rights criticisms, facing resolute opposition from the vast majority of nations, leading to their repeated failures.
