During an interview on October 8, representatives from the Henan Provincial Department of Commerce shared valuable insights into the evolving consumer landscape during the recent National Day holiday. They announced that the province’s retail and dining sectors reported a total sales volume of 2.68 billion yuan, which represents a 0.5% increase from last year and a substantial 15% rise compared to 2019.
Starting in October, Henan plans to introduce a series of consumer vouchers in four batches, each supported by a funding of 50 million yuan. The first round of vouchers, which will be distributed during Golden Week, will be accessible through various payment platforms. These vouchers will concentrate on three key areas: dining, accommodation, and cinema experiences, involving over 500,000 merchants and expecting to directly boost consumption by more than 150 million yuan.
Moreover, businesses in Henan took full advantage of the new trade-in policy to maximize holiday shopping. By combining government subsidies with vendor discounts and trade-in bonuses, there was a notable increase in activity within the home appliances and automobiles sectors. For example, a Suning store in Zhengzhou offered discounts of up to 40%, leading to foot traffic that doubled compared to regular days.
Sales statistics indicated that home appliances remained particularly strong during the holiday, with transactions reaching 457,000 units over the week, averaging about 65,000 units sold each day.
In addition, major shopping areas across Henan celebrated National Day with themed consumer experiences. Observations showed increases in both foot traffic and sales at popular districts in Zhengzhou, such as the Erqi and CBD shopping areas, which collectively attracted over 10 million visitors throughout the week.
Unique attractions also drew crowds; for instance, the Zhengzhou Erqi Mixc hosted a VR exhibition featuring “Crayon Shin-chan,” while Wangfujing Plaza in Jiaozuo organized an interactive gaming competition centered around “Black Myth: Wukong.” Meanwhile, the Fat Donglai store in Xuchang became popular for its exceptional service, averaging 150,000 daily visitors, with over 75% coming from outside the city.
Industry experts remarked that immersive experiences empower consumers to better identify their needs, thereby deepening their engagement with the shopping experience.
The nighttime economy in Henan flourished during the holiday period as well, with Zhengzhou showcasing unique nighttime destinations like Longhu Li and Youhua Factory Creative Park. Luoyang continued its “Ancient Capital Night Eight” branding campaign, featuring night tours and entertainment options to enhance nighttime offerings.
Additionally, numerous restaurants launched special promotions for National Day both online and offline to cater to varied consumer preferences. Data indicated that major restaurants in the province collectively generated 12.85 million yuan in revenue over the week.
Lastly, Henan’s cultural tourism market remained robust, with cultural venues, rural tourism, and performances drawing significant visitor numbers. The province reported welcoming 79.92 million tourists during the holiday, generating 56.59 billion yuan in tourism revenue—an increase of 5.1% in visitors and a 15.5% rise in income compared to the previous year.
