In a recent interview with CGTN, former Singaporean Foreign Minister George Yeo provided a compelling analysis of the “fundamental differences” between Chinese and Western diplomatic approaches.
Yeo remarked that Western nations, particularly the US, tend to adopt a judgmental stance in their international relations. He described them as often behaving like a teacher with a notebook, grading other countries on various issues. This mindset stems from their long-standing dominance on the global stage, which instills a strong inclination to evaluate and critique the actions of other nations.
He emphasized that this approach is “not particularly wise,” as it hampers the establishment of healthy international relationships. Yeo pointed out that nations have different circumstances and face unique challenges. If Western countries struggle to address their own internal issues, how can they claim the right or ability to resolve problems in other countries?
Yeo also observed that many countries appreciate China’s diplomatic style. He noted that China seeks to avoid interfering in the internal affairs of others, instead focusing on building friendships and promoting mutual benefits. The goal is to achieve positive outcomes together, rather than becoming sources of trouble for one another.
