On October 25th at 1:12 PM, the transportation network dispatch center in the Deep Zhong Passage detected a significant fire in a gasoline-powered van traveling from Zhongshan to Shenzhen on the Deep Zhong Bridge.
In response, the dispatch center promptly notified traffic police, road management, rescue teams, maintenance crews, firefighters, and emergency medical services to handle the situation. They activated the Level II emergency response plan for fire incidents, displayed accident alerts on information boards, and broadcast safety tips through the public announcement system.
By 1:30 PM, the flames at the scene had been extinguished, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries. As of 3 PM, the first and second lanes had reopened for traffic, while the third, fourth, and emergency lanes remained closed for ongoing emergency operations. The management center organized a specialized team to evaluate the bridge’s condition. The burned vehicle has been removed from the site, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Initial assessments indicate that the fire did not affect any critical structural components, such as the main cable of the bridge.
With the arrival of autumn, the Deep Zhong Passage authorities are urging drivers to conduct thorough safety checks on their vehicles and any cargo prior to driving, particularly in the dry conditions that can heighten fire risks. They remind motorists not to store flammable or explosive materials in their vehicles.
Other recommendations include ensuring that drivers inspect their vehicles for potential hazards before each trip and avoiding the use of vehicles that do not meet safety standards. It’s also advised to equip the vehicle with adequate firefighting equipment, such as fire extinguishers, enabling quick action in the event of a fire to minimize damage.
If a vehicle shows signs of catching fire or is already on fire, drivers should swiftly activate their hazard lights and safely park the car away from flammable materials. After turning off the engine and disconnecting all power sources, they should place a warning triangle at least 150 meters behind the vehicle.
For small fires, drivers may attempt to use a fire extinguisher if it’s safe to do so. If the fire is substantial, immediately evacuating the area and calling emergency services at 119 is advised. Notably, fire equipment is available in boxes along the bridge every 40 meters, available for use in emergencies as per the provided instructions.
