On the morning of October 21, a tragic shooting occurred in Fall City, a suburb southwest of Seattle, involving a family of seven. The incident resulted in the deaths of five family members, leaving one person injured. A 15-year-old teenager is the prime suspect, accused of killing his software engineer father, Mark Humiston, 42, his mother, Sarah, and three siblings, with one sister managing to escape.
Reports from the Daily Mail indicate that the family was found shot in their rural mansion near Lake Alice, located approximately 30 miles east of Seattle. The police have not yet disclosed the names or ages of the victims, nor their exact relationships. However, neighbors say the teenage suspect is responsible for the deaths of his parents and siblings, except for one sister who was lucky enough to escape the violence.
According to reports, the surviving sister was shot twice but managed to seek help from neighbors, who rushed her to the hospital. Officials have stated that her condition is satisfactory.
Based on Mark Humiston’s LinkedIn profile, he hailed from Texas and had served as vice president at Hargis Engineers in Seattle for nearly 20 years. The Humiston family purchased their expansive three-bedroom, four-bathroom home in 2019.
Earlier in the investigation, authorities confirmed that among the deceased were three minors, and the 15-year-old suspect is currently in custody. King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Mike Mellis noted that multiple 911 calls were received around 5 a.m., prompting an immediate police response and the apprehension of the teen, along with urgent medical assistance for the injured girl.
Upon entering the home, officers discovered five bodies, including two adults and three teenagers. Mellis described the scene as “clearly a horrific crime.”
The spokesperson mentioned that the individuals involved appeared to be family members, but the specifics of their relationships remain unclear. “There is no ongoing threat to the community, and there is no reason to arrest anyone else,” he added.
The suspect is being held at the King County Juvenile Detention Center. His attorneys, Amy Parker and Molly Campera, stated in a release that he enjoys mountain biking and fishing and has no previous criminal record.
Neighbor Lynne Trowern expressed her shock at the incident, stating, “I was completely terrified, and I couldn’t stop crying. I can’t stay here alone; I keep seeing the children’s faces.” She recalled seeing the children playing in the garage just the day before.
King County Councilmember Sarah Perry noted that the shooting occurred in the Lake Alice area of Fall City, and local relatives have come forward to care for the surviving family member.
Sheriff Patricia Cole-Tindall expressed her deep sadness and concern over the incident, stating, “My team will ensure a thorough investigation to clarify the facts surrounding this case.” The authorities have preliminarily classified the incident as a case of “domestic violence.”
The injured girl, after being shot, ran to a neighbor’s house for help, and was subsequently transported to Harborview Medical Center, where her condition is reported to be satisfactory.
Former neighbors spoke about the family, describing the children as polite and well-educated at home. They also noted that the family frequently went for walks around the lake together, often helping neighbors with various tasks.
Washington State Patrol has been called to assist at the crime scene, with the investigation being led by the King County Sheriff’s Office’s major crimes unit.
