A recent report from a CCTV journalist reveals that the Guiyang Intermediate People’s Court in Guizhou Province has once again determined that Yu Huaying’s criminal activities were particularly severe and posed a significant threat to society. Consequently, the court sentenced Yu to death for the crime of child trafficking, imposed a lifelong deprivation of political rights, and ordered the confiscation of all her personal assets.
During the court proceedings, Yu expressed her intention to appeal.
**Case Overview:**
In 2004, Yu was apprehended while committing crimes in Yunnan. Out of fear, she concealed her identity by taking on the alias Zhang Yun. Initially sentenced to eight years in prison, her term was later reduced by three years, leading to her release in 2009.
In 2022, a girl named Yang Niuhua, who had been trafficked, reported the crime, resulting in Yu’s arrest once again as her past offenses were uncovered.
On September 18, 2023, the Guiyang Intermediate Court found Yu guilty of child trafficking. The court classified her actions as particularly severe with far-reaching negative impacts and sentenced her to death with a lifelong deprivation of political rights.
Subsequently, on November 28, 2023, the case was brought before the Guizhou Provincial Higher People’s Court for a second instance hearing.
On January 8, 2024, the Higher People’s Court ruled that the initial verdict should be revisited, citing that the original trial overlooked other instances of Yu’s child trafficking, and certain facts surrounding the case remained unclear. Therefore, a retrial was deemed necessary to clarify the complete scope of Yu’s criminal activities.
In a retrial that took place on October 11, 2024, the prosecution recommended a death sentence for Yu Huaying in connection with her child trafficking case.
