Guangdong holds festivals in golden autumn to promote consumption of high-quality forest products

In an interview conducted during the recent Agricultural Harvest Festival, held from October 22 to 24 in Shaoguan, we explored the rich diversity of economic forest products from Guangdong province. Notable highlights included tea oil from Shaoguan, agarwood from Huizhou, cinnamon from Yunfu, and Huanjuhong from Maoming. This second Economic Forest Festival attracted over 60 leading forestry enterprises from 21 cities across the province, showcasing their products.

Themed “Green and Beautiful Guangdong, Fragrant Fruits,” the festival was organized by the Guangdong Forestry Bureau and the Shaoguan Municipal Government. It aimed to promote high-quality, green specialty forest products through collaboration between government and businesses, highlighting the unique appeal of Guangdong’s tree-based grains and oils, economic forest fruits, and the underground economy.

At the opening ceremony on the 23rd, 18 major forest product buyers, both from within and outside the province, gathered to sign ten procurement intention agreements, collectively valued at nearly 30 million yuan. Additionally, ten forestry industry cooperation projects were launched, with a total investment of 1.986 billion yuan, sparking further momentum for the development of forestry in Guangdong.

The event also featured a diverse range of activities including displays and sales of Guangdong’s specialty economic forest products, tasting sessions of tea oil-based delicacies, and live streaming sales. The venue buzzed with interest as products like reishi mushrooms, agarwood, and golden camellia drew attention, while the aroma of local Shaoguan delicacies such as peanut cakes and fried taro balls cooked with tea oil filled the air.

Local farmers participated actively, bringing their specialty products to engage with representatives from exhibiting companies and buyers alike.

Statistics reveal that in 2023, the area dedicated to the underground economy in Guangdong has reached 34.03 million acres, generating a total output value of 54.63 billion yuan. The province hosts one national forestry industry demonstration park and 30 specialized forestry development bases. Additionally, there are five national forest health bases and 67 provincial health bases, along with 18 national underground economy demonstration bases and 194 provincial ones. The total output value of the forestry industry in Guangdong reached 895 billion yuan in 2023.

Currently, Guangdong is focusing on developing eight key industrial clusters: oil tea, bamboo, forest medicinal materials, horticultural seedlings, wood processing and furniture manufacturing, fragrance and flavor, eco-tourism, and forest wellness, as part of its modern forestry industry construction strategy. The “14th Five-Year Plan for Forestry Industry Development in Guangdong” aims to achieve a total output value of 1 trillion yuan by 2025.
