Domestic regional passenger aircraft ARJ21 is stationed in Hubei and will fly multiple routes

On October 25, it was announced that the domestically produced regional jet ARJ21 will officially enter the Hubei market on October 27. According to a report from China Southern Airlines’ Hubei branch, the first ARJ21 aircraft began its trial operations in Wuhan on October 14, serving routes to Guangzhou, Shantou, and Chongqing.

In an interview, Wang Gang, General Manager of China Southern Airlines Hubei branch, highlighted the significance of this development. “As the first airline in the Hubei region to operate the ARJ21, we’re excited to enhance our fleet structure. This addition allows for a balanced fleet mix of wide-body, medium-sized, and domestically produced regional aircraft. We anticipate a more efficient flight schedule and greater variety for our passengers.”

The ARJ21 is set to make its official debut with comprehensive preparations in place. The first aircraft is already operating on select routes, while a second aircraft will arrive on October 27, introducing new routes from Wuhan to Hohhot, Xiamen, and Wenzhou, along with existing ones. A third ARJ21 is scheduled to join the operation on December 1.

Wang further shared the airline’s vision for future growth, stating, “By the end of May 2025, we plan to gradually increase the number of ARJ21 aircraft in Wuhan to five. This expansion will enable us to connect more cities, enhancing regional air service across Hubei and Central China, while filling in some gaps left by larger trunk flights. Our goal is to create a one-hour travel radius in the central region.”

The ARJ21 is a domestically developed aircraft built to international standards, boasting exceptional all-weather and all-terrain capabilities. Wang Yi Ming, Deputy Chief of the Airline’s Technical Division in Hubei, explained some key features of the aircraft, noting that the cabin is 40 to 50 centimeters wider than similar models, with a seating capacity of 90. Passengers will find ample legroom, and the cabin features a “two-and-three” seating arrangement, with USB charging ports available at every row, making it convenient for travelers to charge their devices.

Additionally, travelers selecting flights operated by the ARJ21 can benefit from a waiver of the Civil Aviation Development Fund fee of 50 yuan (previously the airport construction fee).
