Final phase of flood alleviation scheme starts

East Devon District Council has announced the commencement of the final phase of a £6 million flood alleviation scheme in Devon. This initiative comes in response to the recurring flooding issues faced by homes in the village of Feniton, where residents have been affected by floods approximately every two to three years since the 1970s.

The project aims to significantly reduce flood risks for around 100 homes. According to council officials, the work is expected to take about a year to complete. It involves the installation of a large 1050mm diameter pipe designed to redirect water through the village, thereby enhancing the capacity of the existing watercourse.

Councillor Geoff Jung, a key figure in the project, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Protecting vulnerable properties from the threat of flooding is crucial. While there may be some temporary inconveniences for local residents due to diversions and road closures, the long-term benefits will far outweigh these issues. We are committed to delivering a resilient flooding solution for the people of Feniton.”

Work will be conducted in and around the village, including surrounding fields, the local playpark, Warwick Close, Wells Avenue, and extending to the southern part of the village, culminating at the outfall on the corner of Ottery Road and Green Lane.
