Nestled in the heart of Manhattan Beach, the Manhattan Beach Library has garnered a reputation as one of the most beautiful libraries in Los Angeles. The library’s second floor offers stunning views of the expansive Pacific Ocean through its large glass windows, creating an ideal atmosphere for reading and relaxation.
If you’re visiting Manhattan Beach, the library is a must-see. Located near the beach along Highland Avenue, this striking glass-walled building features a vibrant entrance adorned with colorful stained glass that sparkles in the sunshine. Inside, natural light pours in, complemented by warm wood finishes that not only offer insulation but evoke a cozy beach ambiance. Unique decorative elements, like octopus-themed chandeliers, further highlight the seaside theme.
Although the library’s design is modern, it has a rich history dating back to 1915 when it became part of the Los Angeles County library system, making it one of the oldest libraries in the network. In 2015, the library underwent significant renovations, with HED and Johnson Favaro collaborating on the design of this approximately 21,500-square-foot, two-story space. The design emphasizes openness, transparency, and aesthetic beauty, featuring areas dedicated to children and teens, as well as a conference room that accommodates up to 80 people. The library’s design achievements have earned it a Gold LEED certification for energy and environmental design.
The most popular spot in the library is undoubtedly the west-facing second-floor area, where visitors can gaze out at the ocean just a few blocks away. On clear days, the breathtaking views of the azure waters provide a perfect backdrop for focused reading or simply taking a moment to unwind. For those who wish to enjoy the fresh ocean air, the beach is just a short walk—two or three blocks away—famed for its tranquility compared to the bustling Santa Monica Beach. Visitors can stroll along the shoreline or relax on the porches of nearby beachside mansions, soaking in the beauty of the Pacific.
As for attractions near the beach, there’s a renowned pink mansion on The Stand street at 1300, which has become a popular spot for social media influencers and tourists alike. Recently decorated for Halloween, this striking home captures the attention of those passing by. During our interview, a group of Chinese students shared that they had come specifically to photograph the house after seeing it online, praising its Victorian architecture that takes them back to the charm of Europe.
The library operates from Monday to Wednesday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Thursday to Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday from 1 PM to 5 PM. It’s conveniently located at 1320 Highland Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.
