American tennis star Jessica Pegula pulled off an impressive comeback today at the U.S. Open, defeating her Czech opponent Karolina Muchova with a final score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to reach her first Grand Slam singles final.
Ranked sixth in the world, Pegula found herself on the brink of elimination after losing the first set. However, she rallied to beat Muchova, who is ranked 52nd. Now, Pegula is set to face Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka in the championship match.
In an interview, Pegula expressed her relief and disbelief, stating, “I feel really lucky that I didn’t get knocked out. She [Muchova] made me look like a rookie; it felt like she was about to crush me, and I was almost in tears. But everything just started to come together. I honestly don’t know how I turned it around.”
Pegula has had an outstanding summer on the North American hard court circuit, boasting a remarkable record of 15 wins out of 16 matches. She claimed the title in Toronto and reached the finals in Cincinnati, where she ultimately fell to Sabalenka.
Reflecting on her upcoming match, Pegula noted, “Now I have a chance for revenge, but beating her won’t be easy.”
