The 20th Cross-Strait Book Fair opens in Taipei

The 20th Cross-Strait Book Fair officially opened on October 15 at the Flower Expo Park in Taipei. The exhibition features several zones, including a display area for mainland Chinese books, a sales area for Taiwanese publications, as well as sections for copyright negotiations and new book launches. Over 100 publishing companies from the mainland are presenting nearly 20,000 titles at the event.

This year’s theme, “Literary Ties Across the Strait, Heartfelt Connections with China,” emphasizes the aim of fostering deeper understanding through shared literature. The fair will also host various activities including book ordering, copyright discussions, seminars on library resource construction, and new book releases. Additional venues in Taichung and Kaohsiung will showcase quality books and facilitate exchanges.

At the event, a wide range of books was on display, including notable titles like “A Century of Chinese Archaeology,” “The Collected Self-Portraits of Mr. Qi Gong,” and “Tulou.” These works span diverse genres such as archaeology, literature, calligraphy, lifestyle, and children’s books.

In an interview, Shen Rongyu, the general manager of Tianlong Cultural and Creative Publishing Co., stated that his company has imported over 30 million books from the mainland over the past 20 years, highlighting the strong market for simplified Chinese books in Taiwan. He emphasized the importance of increasing exchanges across the Strait through reading and other means to enhance mutual understanding.

Wu Fang, president of Changge Art Communication, shared that the exhibition includes not only art books and albums but also works by renowned mainland artists. He expressed hope that in the future, outstanding Taiwanese artists’ works could be promoted in mainland China to further cultural exchange.

The event is co-organized by the China Publishing Association and the Taiwan Book Publishers Association, marking the second time since the 14th fair in 2018 that the Cross-Strait Book Fair has taken place in Taiwan. Following an invitation from the Taiwan Book Publishers Association, relevant publishing and library institutions from the mainland have come to participate.

Since its inception in July 2005 in Xiamen, the Cross-Strait Book Fair has successfully held 19 editions, facilitating book trade worth over 700 million RMB and establishing more than 4,000 copyright trade and cooperation projects.
