On October 15, 2023, the Education University of Hong Kong (EduHK) partnered with People’s Education Press to host a seminar aimed at enhancing the collaboration between educational experts and practitioners from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The event, titled “Seminar on Curriculum Development for Primary and Secondary Education in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau,” focused on discussing the future directions and challenges of education.
During the opening ceremony, Vice Minister of Education Wang Jiayi emphasized the central government’s commitment to improving curriculum design in the new era. He noted that the systems supporting curriculum work have become more robust and effective, leading to significant advancements in quality. Wang highlighted that Hong Kong and Macau have also made impressive strides in curriculum development. He urged educational professionals to align their efforts with the goal of building a strong educational nation, emphasizing the importance of innovation and collective effort in establishing a high-quality curriculum unique to China.
Carrie Lam, Secretary for Education in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, also spoke at the event. She underscored that high-quality educational materials not only inspire student engagement and critical thinking but also play a crucial role in cultural transmission. Lam stressed that maintaining and enhancing curriculum quality is fundamental to nurturing students’ values and capabilities. She pointed out that it is the responsibility of all educators to ensure curricula meet standards of truth, goodness, and beauty.
EduHK President Li Zhi-jian expressed his hope that the seminar would provide an excellent platform for experts, curriculum editors, and educators from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau to share their experiences regarding curriculum design, philosophy, and opportunities for collaboration in the mission of building a strong educational nation.
The seminar also featured the opening of an exhibition titled “Cultivating the Soul, Enlightening Wisdom – Primary and Secondary Education Curriculum Exhibition,” alongside a book donation event. This exhibition showcases selected primary and secondary education materials published by People’s Education Press and Higher Education Press, reflecting the achievements in curriculum development since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with curricula that embody the values integral to education in the nation.
