Hezbollah leader expresses support for ceasefire State Department- Representatives are suffering heavy losses_1

In recent weeks, Israel has ramped up its bombing campaigns against Hezbollah, leading to a considerable number of casualties. Naim Qassem, Hezbollah’s deputy secretary-general, recently indicated that while the organization’s military capabilities remain intact, he is in favor of efforts led by Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to pursue a ceasefire. During a regular briefing on October 8, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller commented on Hezbollah’s change in stance, suggesting that their call for a ceasefire highlights their current vulnerabilities and substantial losses.

As reported by Reuters, Qassem addressed these developments in a televised speech on the same day, acknowledging the “painful blows” Hezbollah has faced due to Israeli strikes, yet asserting that the group’s military strength is still solid. He reiterated his support for Berri’s initiatives to achieve a ceasefire.

Miller noted, “The international community has been calling for a ceasefire for the past year, but Hezbollah has consistently rejected it. Now, after facing significant setbacks, they’ve suddenly shifted their position and called for a ceasefire.”

He further emphasized the U.S. commitment to seeking a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict, with the ultimate aim of reaching a lasting peace agreement.

When asked about discussions surrounding the Lebanese presidential election and Berri’s involvement, Miller replied that U.S. officials are engaging with various stakeholders in Lebanon, typically using intermediaries. He added, “These discussions are ongoing, and I don’t think it would be productive to go into too much detail publicly.”
