Squeeze review – slick pop perfection that refuses to show its age

**Interviewer:** Glenn, you kicked off the 50th anniversary UK tour at Sheffield City Hall, but the opening night didn’t quite go as expected. Can you share what transpired?

**Glenn Tilbrook:** Sure thing! To be honest, it was a little nerve-wracking. My voice started to falter pretty early in the show. In a moment of desperation, I invited someone from the audience to take a crack at singing “Another Nail in My Heart.” It was a bit of a gamble, but the woman totally crushed it! I thought to myself, “Sheffield’s got talent!” It lifted a huge burden off my shoulders.

**Interviewer:** That sounds like a bold move! How did the rest of the show unfold after that?

**Glenn Tilbrook:** Well, I had to make some quick changes to the setlist since I was struggling a bit. There were definitely a few songs we had to skip. However, we still managed to perform a solid number, and the audience seemed to really enjoy it.

**Interviewer:** Anniversary tours can sometimes lead to bands sounding a bit worn out or uninterested. How do you think Squeeze has managed to steer clear of that?

**Glenn Tilbrook:** Great question! Even though we’re rooted in the new wave era, a lot of our songs have really stood the test of time. Tracks like “Up the Junction” and “Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)” still resonate. They’re crafted like well-engineered cars; they just keep cruising along.

**Interviewer:** Your band is known for its tight musicianship. How did your bandmates handle your vocal challenges during the performance?

**Glenn Tilbrook:** The eight-piece band is incredibly talented. They really rose to the occasion and pushed the songs into some extended grooves, which made for an exhilarating finish. Chris Difford sounded fantastic on “Cool for Cats,” and our closing number “Take Me I’m Yours” was anchored by those bubbling synths and tight drumming, which really packed a punch.

**Interviewer:** An audience member even called you the best singer they’ve ever heard. What does that mean to you, especially considering your voice was under pressure?

**Glenn Tilbrook:** It’s definitely flattering! It speaks volumes about the band’s collective talent that we managed to end strong despite the circumstances. I’m just really thankful for the fantastic support from everyone, both on stage and in the crowd.

**Interviewer:** What’s next for Squeeze as you continue on this tour?

**Glenn Tilbrook:** We’ll be on the road until November 22nd, and I’m feeling optimistic about how the rest of the tour will unfold. We genuinely love performing for our fans, and we’re committed to giving it our all every time we take the stage.
